Executive Vice President and President, Nicor Gas
AGL Resources
Ralph Cleveland was named executive vice president and president, Nicor Gas, for AGL Resources (NYSE:GAS) in December 2011. Mr. Cleveland has responsibility for the utility business unit results of Nicor Gas, a natural gas distribution company serving 2.2 million residential, commercial and industrial customers in Northern Illinois.
Mr. Cleveland previously served as executive vice president, engineering and operations. Primary among his responsibilities was executive oversight of the policy direction for the supply chain and technical support operations activities of AGL Resources. He was also chairman and chief executive officer of several of AGL Resources subsidiaries including Jefferson Island Storage & Hub, Golden Triangle Storage and Magnolia Pipeline.
Mr. Cleveland has held a variety of positions at AGL Resources, including senior vice president, engineering and operations, and vice president, engineering and construction. As vice president of operations for Virginia Natural Gas after it was acquired by AGL Resources in 2000, he was responsible for integration of operations and engineering activities including distribution and pipeline operations, propane peak shaving operations, and customer care.
He began his career at AGL Resources as manager of Southeast Georgia operations for Atlanta Gas. Prior to his work in local gas distribution, he spent more than a decade in oil and gas production, research and development; natural gas processing; and petrochemical industries.
Mr. Cleveland serves on a number of nonprofit, community and industry boards and advisory councils. He is chairman of the board of the American Institute for Managing Diversity and first vice chair of the national board of the American Association of Blacks in Energy. He is immediate past chairman and CEO of the North American Energy Standards Board.
He is a member of the board of trustees for the Georgia Tech Alumni Association and also serves as an advisory board member to the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Tech.
Mr. Cleveland is president and founder of the Capital and Enterprise Development Group, a non-profit endeavor that is dedicated to economic inclusion and socio-economic development. He is an executive committee member of the board for Leadership Atlanta and served in a similar capacity for Junior Achievement. He was executive sponsor of the 2011 AGL Resources United Way Campaign.
Mr. Cleveland has been recognized as an Outstanding Georgia Citizen by the Secretary of the State of Georgia, as one of the Top 100 Most Influential Blacks in Corporate America by SaVoy Magazine and as one of the 50 Most Important African Americans in Technology.
A native of Macon, Ga., Mr. Cleveland received his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech, completed post-graduate studies in mechanical engineering at Rice University in Houston and received his master’s degree in business administration from Tulane University in New Orleans.
