Senior Vice President, Engineering and Operations
Ralph Cleveland was named senior vice president, engineering and operations, in November 2004. Primary among his responsibilities is executive oversight of the policy direction for the engineering and centralized technical operations activities of the company. Cleveland also serves on several corporate and investment oversight committees within the organization, including the AGL Resources Policy Committee, which he joined in June 2007. Prior to his role as senior vice president, Cleveland served as vice president, engineering and construction, a position he had held since June 2002.
Cleveland previously served as vice president of operations for Virginia Natural Gas, where he was responsible for operations integration of the newly acquired utility. Prior to his work in local gas distribution, he worked in research and development, natural gas processing, oil and gas production, and petrochemicals.
Cleveland is president and founder of the Capital Formation and Enterprise Development Foundation and Network, non-profit and collaborative endeavors, respectively, which are dedicated to economic inclusion and socio-economic development in emerging domestic and international economies. He is a member of the board of directors of the North American Energy Standards Board, a member of the national board of directors and public policy committee of the American Association of Blacks in Energy and a corporate roundtable member of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators. He has previously served in the community as a vice-chair of the board of directors for the Atlanta Chapter of the American Red Cross and secretary of the board of trustees for the Georgia Conservancy. He also formally chaired the Fulton County Workforce Investment Board, was treasurer of the Georgia Workforce Leadership Association, and was a commissioner of the City of Virginia Beach Human Rights Commission. He is a graduate of the Leadership Atlanta Class of 2007.
Cleveland has been recognized as an Outstanding Georgia Citizen by the Secretary of the State of Georgia, recently received the honor of being one of Atlanta’s Men of Distinction from the Atlanta Business League and Who’s Who in Black Atlanta, and was honored as a recipient of the 2004 Men Who Soar award by Men Looking Ahead Magazine.
A native of Macon, Georgia, Cleveland received his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech, completed post-graduate studies in mechanical engineering at Rice University in Houston and received his master’s degree in business administration from Tulane University in New Orleans.
