Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer, AGL Resources
President, AGL Resources Foundation
Melanie M. Platt was named executive vice president and chief people officer for AGL Resources (NYSE:GAS) in December 2011. In this role she provides executive oversight for the AGL Resources enterprise functions of human resources, corporate communications and organizational effectiveness. She also serves as president of the AGL Resources Foundation. In this role, she oversees the company's corporate giving strategy, focusing efforts on programs and activities that benefit the communities in which AGL Resources operates. Previously, she served as senior vice president, human resources, marketing and communications.
Prior to joining AGL Resources, Ms. Platt practiced law for 10 years with McKenna Long Aldridge (formerly Long, Aldridge & Norman). During her tenure, she worked closely with Atlanta Gas Light in the areas of corporate finance and securities.
Ms. Platt is active in community and volunteer organizations. She currently serves on the boards of Atlanta Habitat for Humanity (chair), board of trustees of Fernbank Museum of Natural History, Leadership Atlanta (member of the Class of 2004), and the Metro Atlanta YMCA. She also serves on the Advisory Council of the Girl Scout Council of Northwest Georgia and is an Ambassador for Dress for Success-Atlanta.Previously, Ms. Platt served on the Emory University Board of Visitors (chair 2007-2008), the executive committee of the board of Central Atlanta Progress, the board of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta, the board of governors of The Southern Institute for Business and Professional Ethics, was a member of the Governor’s State Health Benefits Plan Task Force, and was the chair of the board of trustees at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church.
In recognition of her professional and civic contributions, Ms. Platt was named a Woman of Excellence by Business to Business magazine in July 2009. She has also received the Trumpet Awards Foundation High Heels in High Places award (2008), was inducted into the YWCA Academy of Women Achievers (2006) and received the Racial Justice Award (2002) from Women Looking Ahead magazine.
Ms. Platt graduated with high honors from Emory University with a bachelor’s degree in art history and earned her juris doctor from Emory University School of Law. Currently she is a member of the State Bar of Georgia and the American Bar Association.
Ms. Platt, her husband and two sons reside in Atlanta.
