Natural Gas Pipeline
AGL Resources will build an approximately nine-mile natural gas pipeline, called a “header system,” to connect Golden Triangle Storage with six intrastate and interstate pipelines in the area. These interconnections will allow the storage facility to access incoming natural gas supplies and then deliver natural gas from storage to the pipelines that serve customers locally as well as in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Southeast.
The company has conducted engineering, environmental and cultural surveys along the proposed pipeline route, which will parallel existing pipeline rights-of-way for most of its length to minimize impact to landowners and to the environment. And just like our plans for the storage facility itself, we will be making safety the top priority as we build and operate the pipeline.
Pipelines are by far the safest means of transporting natural gas, and we will take a number of steps, from design and construction into operation, to protect the safety of our neighbors. The pipeline, featuring automatic shut-off valves, will be buried underground, constructed of high-quality steel, protected against corrosion, monitored 24-hours a day, and inspected regularly, both visually and with electronic equipment. We also will maintain an emergency response plan, coordinated with local authorities, to respond promptly if needed.
