Safety
Underground storage is the safest means of storing natural gas, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. And salt dome caverns designed, built and operated specifically to store natural gas have a particularly stellar safety record.
In caverns located approximately a half-mile to a mile deep underground, geological conditions make the salt formations rock hard, creating a virtually impermeable barrier to contain the natural gas. Thousands of feet of rock, soil and other sediments protect the cavern from above.
At AGL Resources, we are committed to making sure that our Golden Triangle Storage facility continues underground storage’s record for safety. We will design, build and operate the facility following all the latest safety guidelines, meeting or exceeding all regulatory requirements.
We build in a number of safety precautions, including
- Emergency shutdown devices at plant and wellhead, with both automatic and manual operation
- Fire detection and extinguishment systems for surface facilities
- Visible and audible alarm systems
- Wellhead barrier to prevent mechanical damage and impact
- Monitoring of storage operations 24/7/365 by trained, qualified personnel
- Emergency response plan – shared and coordinated with local authorities
- Employee training on safety and operations
- Testing, reliability and maintenance programs
In the unlikely event of a leak from the storage facility, the lighter-than-air natural gas would dissipate straight up into the atmosphere. Any impact would be limited to the immediate project site, which is isolated from its nearest neighbors – other industrial facilities – and removed from residential areas.
